Tegan and Sara

The Beacon Theater.
February 20, 2013.

After 2 failed attempts at trying to see Tegan and Sara in New York, they finally came through our city on February 20, 2013. It was their second show in New York at the Beacon Theater and most of the crowd had already been to the show the night before.

D I A N A, the opening act, was intense had a unique singer and with some odd dance moves, captivated the audience, though no one stood up. D I A N A had the same sort of sense of humor as Tegan and Sara, which endeared her to the audience. She seemed nervous at times, though the lead singer's vocals never faltered. After their beautiful performance of their single "Born Again," the band exited the stage after receiving a thunderous applause.

The excitement was radiating through the room when the crew members started to set up for Tegan and Sara, after Opening act D I A N A rocked the stage. Most of the audience had already found their seats in preparation for the girls to walk on stage. When they arrived, the entire audience stood up and continued standing for most of the show.

We were seated in the second row, on the two end seats, so we had a fantastic view. Tegan and Sara continued to perform a mix of both new and some of the fan favorites from past albums, including "My Number" and "Living Room." When the band began playing "How Come You Don't Want Me" the entire audience erupted in excitement as Sara's powerful vocals poured through the speakers.

There were a lot of funny moments, including the moment when Tegan revealed to the audience that there would be an "exciting surprise" at the end of the show, and Sara turned to her and compared her reveal of the surprise to commercials for television shows, where they show previews of what happens next week and reveal every highlight of the episode, leaving no surprises.

The two of them were hilarious in their banter, though they bantered a lot less than they used to. At one point, Sara leaned into the microphone and whispered hilariously "don't do acid."

Overall, there was not one moment where Tegan and Sara left the audience disappointed. They performed a long, interesting, hilarious show that left most, if not all of the audience entertained. Their end song "Feel It In My Bones" was great, except for the fact that the bouncers allowed a deeply intoxicated woman to stand in the isle and both elbow me and swing her hair across my face for the duration of the song. To say she was "white girl wasted' is an understatement. Her fist pumping was a millimeter away from punching me in the face.
